In today’s digital world, an increasing number of jobs require a knowledge of coding – even if only a basic level of knowledge. According to a recent study published by software company Burning Glass, seven million job openings in 2015 listed coding as an asset to the role.

Many of these jobs are not in traditionally technical fields. We hear this time and time again in our discussions with industry experts who use coding in their various jobs; coding can open up many doors and take you anywhere.

Here are some industries open to those with a working knowledge of coding:

Arts & Design

Coding and design have always gone hand in hand. More and more companies are starting to prioritize user experiences by making sure that their websites and apps combine great design and responsive functionality. It’s not uncommon to see graphic designers designing website concepts and then working closely with developers to bring those concepts to life. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jay Eckert, founder at Parachute Design on how his company combines coding and graphic design.

Video Games

Many of our students already have a lot of fun coding games as part of their showcases and projects (check out some of their recent projects here!) With modern video games becoming more and more complex and realistic, there is an ever-increasing need for skilled programmers to work closely with game designers and artists to bring their unique characters and environments to life.

Film & Television

When we think of the film and TV industry, we think of celebrities – the glitz and the glamour of it all – but there is a lot of coding and programming work that goes on behind the scenes to bring moments to life on the big screen. We recently spoke with Aaron Weintraub, Senior VFX Supervisor at Mr. X Inc. – a cutting edge visual effects company – who revealed that they only use a few off-the-shelf applications in their workflow – they code and program the rest themselves!

At Hatch, we encourage our students to explore their imaginations, because at the end of the day, their potential is limitless. We share this same sentiment about the future of coding in the workplace. As technology and coding languages get more sophisticated, so will the need for those who know the ins and outs of coding. Set your kids up for a bright future by helping them get a head start on their future careers!
